You may be healthy today, but a serious injury or illness could mean financial disaster if you are uninsured. Under the Affordable Care Act that took effect in 2014, if you do not purchase health insurance during open enrollment you cannot buy during the year unless you have experienced a government defined life event (such as marriage, divorce, birth or loss of coverage). 

If you do not have an approved reason to buy insurance after open enrollment, you will not be permitted to purchase insurance until the next year’s open enrollment period begins. If you go uninsured for a period greater than two months, the government will charge a tax penalty determined by the greater amount: of 2.5% of your household income, or $695 per adult ($347.50 per child)
